From the first lesson children are invited to explore their instrument through pictures and games. An overall sense of play engages them into highly focused studies. Familiar Singing Rascals songs from the music and movement classes reappear in the instrumental tutor books making learning the technical demands of the instrument much easier.
Through colouring, copying, composing, performing & improvising children develop:
• Solid technique • Musical theory • Musical expression • Ear training through Solfege (do,re,mi) • The ability to transpose pieces at sight • Music reading and writing skills through a unique colour-coded system of notation
Weekly one-to-one lessons are supplemented by a group class that is usually taken on the same day. Apart from the fact that children love meeting other children and enjoy making music together, group lessons provide wonderful opportunities for cross learning.
Children should normally have completed two years of the Music and Movement training in the 4-5 year (music reading 1) and 5-6 year (music reading 2) classes. They will have acquired a strong musical foundation; a good ear, good coordination, in-tune singing, fluent in music reading and writing, and a good understanding of the basic music concepts.
Children with no previous Colourstrings experience will still easily learn but need to be grouped with other children of a similar level in order to begin to develop essential musicianship skills and instrumental skills simultaneously. ** Prerequisites: Your child must be 5 years old (or older)
