Kitty Cello Teacher - Shang Jung Kitty Chan
Shang Jung Kitty Chan, recipient of the 2018 British Columbia Arts Council Scholarship, is also a holder of two Performer’s Associate Diplomas (ARCT) from the Royal Conservatory of Music for cello and piano. She started her musical journey in Taiwan at the age of 6, where she developed passion and strong fundamentals for both piano and cello.
During early years, Kitty competed in several competitions such as various Kiwanis Music Festivals, which led to her nomination to compete in the Performing Arts BC Provincial Festivals. To further enrich her musical endeavors, Kitty appeared at various summer programs, all with generous scholarships upon admission. Some of which includes the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Scotia Festival of Music, and Le Domaine Forget Strings Academy.
As an active performer, she played as a section cellist with the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa as part of their Institute of Orchestral Studies Program and celebrated NACO’s 50th anniversary by performing a public noon hour concert. She was nominated to be part of the uOttawa at NAC Fourth Stage Series, where she performed the beautiful Beethoven Cello Sonata No. 3 and Shostakovich Piano Quintet. Kitty kept several impressive concert programs, some notable works performed include Kodaly Sonata for Cello Solo, Bach Suites 4-6, Ligeti Sonata for Solo Cello, and Bright Sheng’s Seven Tunes Heard in China.
She was also a mentee in the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra for two full seasons. After relocating to Vancouver, she has performed with Vetta Chamber Music, as well as the Vancouver Island Symphony.
Kitty has had the pleasure to participate in numerous public masterclasses, including ones with world-class cellists Mischa Maisky, Paul Watkins from the Emerson String Quartet, Laurence Lesser of New England Conservatory of Music, Marc Coppey of Conservatoire de Paris, Steven Doane, and Philippe Muller. Kitty is a graduate of University of Ottawa, studied closely with Professor Paul Marleyn.
